Must See & Do in San Francisco

These are what we recommend as the top five things that you simply can't miss in San Francisco! Visitors and locals alike love these attractions, with a huge amount of fun available to fill a day of exploration. Experience the steep hills and electic ambiance of San Francisco to make your world travels complete.

  1. Ride the Cable Cars - Grab a cable car near the Powell Market or over near Ghiradelli Square. Ride to Fisherman's Wharf to enjoy a fresh seafood snack at one of the kiosks, then hop back on a cable car to return to your point of origin. This is the way to really experience the ambiance of the city.
  2. Fisherman's Wharf -  This is the place where visitors come no matter how many times they visit San Francisco. The freshest seafood, the salty ocean breezes, the history of seafaring days; all make Fisherman's Wharf a must-see when in the city. Take a cruise while you're here and enjoy an exciting adventure in Northern California's largest city.
  3. Chinatown -  Chinatown is where visitors wander and let the day happen. With great restaurants like Hang Ah Tea Room and incredible shops offering items you can find no place else, you will find this a rewarding stop. Although Grant Avenue is the main drag for tourists, try other streets to get more surprises than you can imagine.
  4. Alcatraz -  - Here, after a ferry ride to the middle of San Francisco Bay, you will get a view of this infamous penitentiary. You'll also see the first lighthouse built on the West Coast. Take a walking tour of the cell block in the now-deserted prison, watch the birds that make the island their home, enjoy the views. This is something not to be missed when visiting San Francisco.
  5. Aquarium of the Bay -  - Discover what riches lie beneath the bay and ocean beyond. The variety of marine life is incredible, and you can move through the clear glass tunnels to see more than 20,000 marine animals. The kids will love to touch a real shark in Touch the Bay!

Best Things to Do for Families

Families arriving in San Francisco could feel slightly overwhelmed with all the varied activities available. But you just need to take it a day at a time, and enjoy as much as you can during your visit. Here are what we think are the top activities to be enjoyed by families visiting the San Francisco area.

  1. Fit in some recreational activities - At Candlestick Point State Recreation Area you and the kids will love to experience the windsurfing, hiking and fishing. Take a picnic lunch and make a day of it. This location is the ideal getaway spot.
  2. Visit some museums - There are a few museums in Golden Gate Park, including the DeYong Museum, with a wide variety of artworks from around the world. The kids particularly love costumes from the Pacific and Africa. Don't miss the Conservatory of Flowers where you can walk though a rainforest environment filled with the wonderful smell of exotic flowers.
  3. Enjoy some magic - At the Marrakech Magic Theater the whole family will have a wonderful time watching San Francisco Magician Peter Morrison and his hilarious two-hour magic show. There is lots of comedy thrown in to delight young and old.
  4. Take the kids to a hands-on museum - There is nothing like a hands-on exhibit and fun events to amuse the children as well as the grown-ups.. At the Children’s Creativity Museum everyone wins with great entertainment. This is the perfect stop on a rainy day, too.
  5. Get up-close-and-personal with Mickey Mouse - You don't have to travel to Disneyland to visit Mickey, but can see him right here at the Walt Disney Family Museum. The museum has many displays from the family's history, as well as the history of Disney art. Goofy is here too, so never fear! All ages love Disney's characters and it will be a fun experience.
